Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) Analysis

Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) is a measure that quantifies the number of neutrophils present in blood. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell crucial for fighting infection by engulfing and destroying bacteria and fungi. The ANC is particularly important in assessing a person's immune system's capacity to combat infections.

ANC Reference Range:

  • Normal Range: 1,500 to 8,000 cells per microliter (µL) of blood.

Treating abnormal ANC levels involves addressing their root causes. In cases of low ANC, safeguarding against infections is paramount. Treatments may include antibiotics to prevent or fight infections, growth factor injections to boost white blood cell production, and possibly adjusting other medications that might be contributing to the low count. For high ANC, or neutrophilia, the focus is on treating the underlying infection or inflammation responsible for the increase. Ongoing monitoring of ANC is vital, especially for those at high risk for neutropenia, like chemotherapy patients, or individuals prone to neutrophilia due to other health issues. By evaluating ANC in relation to the patient's overall health and specific symptoms, healthcare providers can customize treatment plans to manage effectively and improve outcomes related to neutrophil-related conditions.
