Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb)

Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb) are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that target thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme found in the thyroid gland. TPOAb testing is used to assess autoimmune thyroid disorders, particularly Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition characterized by inflammation of the thyroid gland.

Reference Range:

  • Normal Range: Below 35 IU/mL.

Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb) Analysis is crucial for diagnosing autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease, with elevated levels indicating an autoimmune response against the thyroid gland. Management for patients with high TPO Ab levels includes thyroid hormone replacement therapy, especially if it leads to hypothyroidism, and regular monitoring of thyroid function tests to track disease progression and treatment efficacy. Symptom management may involve using beta-blockers for hyperthyroid symptoms and other interventions to support the patient's emotional and physical well-being.
